Rabbit (First Published in Denver Quarterly)

My rabbit won’t fetch

balls of any size

its red eyes follow

their green parabolic curves

till their fated plummets

Hidden like a dandelion

in tides of high grass

my rabbit, a well-positioned

prey watches golden retrievers

yipping with hot fervor

chasing after green orbs

tossed far by their humans

their repetitive and futile

rituals of long-lost huntsmanship

With two ears jutting

like unsheathed knives

of permanent sorrow

My rabbit stands

on its hind legs

like an Athenian warrior

unarmored

& refuses to fetch
